Director of Maintenance (Full-Time Position)

Palmetto Breeze Transit is looking for an experienced Director of Maintenance who has a vast working knowledge of Public Transit Maintenance and strong leadership skills. The Director of Maintenance is responsible for comprehensive delivery of the maintenance operations; providing information and serving as a resource to executive leadership; achieving defined objectives by planning, evaluating, developing, implementing, and maintaining fleet services in compliance with established guidelines, codes, and regulations. The position reports to the Executive Director and is based in Bluffton, SC.

  • Developing vehicle, facility, and other maintenance contract service specifications; defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.

  • Interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.

  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc. are sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

  • Must submit to a criminal background check, the results of which must meet hiring criteria for the role.

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, and seeing. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Training and Experience:

  • An associate degree, or equivalent, is required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible supervisory/management level experience in transit maintenance. 

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

  • Applicants must hold a valid Class B (CDL) driver’s license or be able to obtain a CDL within 6 months of the hire date. Certificates or licenses in auto or diesel mechanics, air conditioning, inspections, or other related maintenance are preferred.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

As a Department Head, the Director is held responsible and accountable for providing strategic planning, direction, goals, and objectives in developing departmental policy, budgets, operation, and staffing. The Maintenance Director reports directly to the Executive Director and serves as a member of the Senior Management Team. 

Essential Duties:  

  • Manages, plans, coordinates, and evaluates the vehicle and/or facility maintenance service program.

  • Works closely with department managers in the Operations team to ensure the effective repair, maintenance, and timely availability of vehicles and equipment for use by personnel.

  • Develop policies, programs, and strategies that provide improvement to the fleet's fuel efficiency and reduction of Greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Manage the investigation and implementation of new products and technologies for both facilities and the fleet.

  • Develops and implements maintenance service goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work plans.

  • Manages statistical and data analysis projects oversee the maintenance of records systems and databases for maintenance tracking and research purposes and administer complex programs and assigned special projects.

  • Participates in recommending the appointment of staff; provides or coordinates staff training, works with employees to correct deficiencies, implements discipline procedures, and ensures that each maintenance team member has a strategic plan for continued development. 

  • Provides technical direction to managerial, professional, and technical staff in carrying out maintenance functions.

  • Prepares and administers the budget of the Maintenance Department.

  • Travels to work sites and locations within or outside of the designated locations to oversee programs and functions.

  • Performs related duties, as required.

This verification will be run on the past two employers or the previous five years, whichever comes first.

  • Personal and Professional References: calls will be placed to individuals listed as references by the applicant.

  • Educational Verification: confirms the applicant's claimed educational institution, including the years attended and the degree/diploma received.

  • Criminal History: includes a review of criminal convictions and probation. The following factors will be considered for applicants with a criminal history:

  • Credit History: confirms candidate's credit history. This search will be run for positions that involve management of Palmetto Breeze Transit funds and/or handling of cash or credit cards.

Human Resources Manager (Full-Time Position)

Palmetto Breeze has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Human Resource Manager who will support public transit operations throughout our five county region. The incumbent will be based in our Administrative Office in Bluffton, SC.

The HR Manager will be responsible for implementing, coordinating and/or administration of HR programs, including payroll, employee benefits, recruiting, development, and change management. They will participate in and/or lead HR initiatives and special projects. They will be the lead for key HR functions such as employee relations, talent acquisition and development, and legal & regulatory compliance.

Are you the HR professional we are looking for to support a robust public transit service in our community?

We are looking for candidates who can:

  • Administer employee benefit programs including PEBA health insurance and retirement, FMLA and FMLA like leaves and track intermittent FMLA.

  • Provide full cycle recruitment support to the transit operations department including job postings, phone screens, offers and onboarding.

  • Educate managers and employees on HR policies, plans, programs, practices, processes, and tools.

  • Oversee fact-finding investigation activities related to internal and external inquiries, complaints, and concerns and prescribe appropriate remedy to resolve complaint or concern.

  • Respond to unemployment claims and workers compensation claims.

  • Maintain HRIS systems.

  • Maintain confidential employee files.

  • Facilitate customer service related training and HR related training.

  • Perform payroll functions as needed to support the business unit.

  • Apply their knowledge and experience in employment law, compensation, organizational planning and development, recruitment, employee relations, safety, employee engagement, and employee development.

 

If you have the following skillset, then we would love to hear from you:

  • A minimum of 2-3 years Human resource management experience in a similar size and type of industry

  • Experience leading HR practices and objectives that will provide an employee-oriented, high performance culture that emphasizes quality, productivity standards, goal attainment and ongoing development of a superior workforce.

  • Knowledge of state/federal HR policies/laws as well as be skilled in the area of labor and employee relations.

  • The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced work environment and demonstrate professional communication skills.

  • Strong attention to details as well as ability to be successful in a high volume, fast paced environment.

  • Computer literate in all MS Office products.

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field is preferred.

Salary is negotiable with a mid-line of $50,000 per year. Full-time employees are eligible for great state health plan benefits. Applicants must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.
